My Merchant Taylors’ Wedding
Newlywed Ellie Bateman talks about her beautiful June wedding at MTH and why she and her husband Ian, wouldn’t have changed a thing.
‘We loved Merchant Taylors’ Hall as soon as we saw it on the website, but the pictures hadn’t prepared us for seeing it in real life. It’s such a beautiful place and as we wanted 180 guests at the ceremony as well as the dinner, it also had the capacity we were struggling to find elsewhere in London.’
The build up
‘Both Ian and I have really stressful jobs in the NHS, so it was important to us that organising our wedding didn’t add to that pressure. Luckily for us, the team at Merchant Taylors’ Hall were so helpful, they made getting married easy. Our wedding planner at MTH was Zara – she was amazing. We handed every supplier, query and challenge over to her and she just simply sorted it out.
‘We asked to have real petals at the service and she went as far as getting in a sample to check they wouldn’t damage the antique carpet in the Great Hall. Lots of people would have just said no to our request, but she went above and beyond so we could have the day we wanted.’
‘On the day itself, we had use of the entire building, and being able to use The Drawing Room to get ready was a huge bonus. It was threatening to rain all morning and it helped me relax knowing I wasn’t going to have to go outside and ruin my hair and make-up before the ceremony. It’s such a beautiful space, full of light, and that wallpaper! It made a wonderful backdrop for our pictures.’
‘I was a little nervous I’d feel overwhelmed walking down the aisle in the Great Hall as it’s such a grand room, but when it was filled with family and friends it felt so welcoming. Our organist had been allowed to practise at the venue beforehand, as apparently all organs play slightly differently. But, as with everything else on the day, his performance of Mendelssohn’s wedding March was perfect. As with our florist, cake maker, wood wind trio, DJ and stylists, once we’d chosen them, we handed their details over to Zara who dealt with all the to-ing and fro-ing.
‘In fact, the service we got from the wedding team at Merchant Taylors’ was so exceptional, they helped us with things we hadn’t even thought about. Like checking if we had any pregnant guests who might need a special menu. Someone even delivered all of our presents to our hotel room for us!’
Drinks, dinner and dancing
‘We opted for Champagne and Pimm’s in the Courtyard after the service. It’s such a stunning space and Zara and her team had decorated it beautifully with the candles and lanterns we’d bought. The Great Hall was then transformed (magically without anyone noticing) into our dining space where we were served a delicious three-course meal. Richard, the Head Chef, had asked us to provide him with four of our favourite ingredients and four of our least favourite. He then prepared three starters, three mains and three desserts for our tasting – it was so hard to choose. Our asparagus starter, chicken wrapped in Parma ham main and Eton mess dessert didn’t disappoint. The Great Hall was then, again seamlessly, turned into the dancefloor and the DJ started up the tunes. It was literally the best day of my life.’
On the day support
‘Zara and her colleague Matt were on hand all day, unobtrusive, but always in sight. If I ever needed them I just had to catch their eye, although it was usually just to get a top up of Champagne!’
